Functionality

The initial design of pit bikes was for moving inside a pit or what we call a garage. However, there is the modification in design and now it can have use like dirt bikes. On the other hand, dirt bikes are suitable for off-road drives and can attain higher speeds.

Engine

Pit bikes typically have four-stroke motors, and they are mostly available in the 50-1400cc range. Pit bikes do not go beyond 250cc.

You will notice four-stroke motors in pit bikes which are available in the range of 50 to 250 CC. On the other hand, dirt bikes are possible to have in both two-stroke and four-stroke versions. Dirt bikes have greater acceleration and are ideal for driving on tracks.

Body shape

Smaller frames, and a lightweight and compact body are what you can expect to have when you buy pit bikes. Such features make it ideal to ride through narrow pit courses. Dirt bikes are bigger compared to pit bikes and so are difficult to maneuver. However, their size makes them ideal to drive on dirt tracks but not possible to drive on narrow courses.

Tires

The knobby tires of dirt bikes make them the ideal machine to run on off-road trails and streets. Due to the tires, the engine stays higher from the ground and allows the bike to have higher speed even on rough terrains. Normally, the front tires of pit bikes are 14 inches and the rear ones 12 inches.

Suspensions

Pit bikes do not need the quality of suspensions that are required for dirt bikes. The reason for this is that pit courses do not have the nature of bumps as in off-road tracks. However, as dirt bikes are driven on off-road tracks the suspension system must be the best.

Speed

You cannot expect to have the same nature of power or speed from a pit bike as you can expect from a dirt bike. The speed range of pit bikes is from 50 CC to 150 CC whereas the speed of dirt bikes does not go below 125 CC.
